Elliot's P.E. Near Heatstroke Crisis (Age 11)

Elliot’s P.E. Near-Heatstroke Crisis occurred in 2015, when eleven-year-old Elliot Landry lost consciousness after becoming badly overheated during physical education in the Montgomery, Alabama area. Noah Jones was also eleven. The school nurse assessed Elliot as close to heatstroke but reached in time to begin cooling him before further progression.

Onset and Recognition

Elliot collapsed during physical education. Noah Jones, who was present with him in the nurse’s office, remained beside him while he regained consciousness slowly. Elliot was nauseated, weak, and initially slow to respond. The nurse used an ice pack and a towel while monitoring him and identified the episode as severe overheating that had come close to heatstroke.

Family Response

The school could not reach Jazmine directly because her phone had no service. Staff called Candy, who was listed as Elliot’s secondary emergency contact. Candy contacted Jazmine through the store where she worked, and both women went to the school. Candy arrived first; Jazmine followed shortly afterward.

During the drive home, Elliot remained severely nauseated and in intense joint pain. Micah sat with him in the back seat and caught his vomit in a bucket when Jazmine pulled over. When they arrived, Elliot’s legs could no longer support him, and Micah carried him inside to the couch.

Candy, Jazmine, and Micah changed Elliot into lighter clothing, used cool cloths, cooling packs, a fan, and a darkened room, and continued monitoring him. Micah cradled and massaged Elliot’s ankles while repeating, “You’re safe. You’re home. We’ve got you.”

When Elliot said that he did not want to return, Micah told him, “You don’t have to, baby. You’re not going back to that P.E. class. We’re gonna take care of it.”

Immediate Outcome

Elliot did not progress to heatstroke, but the episode continued at home with vomiting, exhaustion, severe joint pain, and continued overheating. The family planned to contact his physician and removed him from the physical-education class.
